Women's Rights,
are Human Rights. Designing posters as an agent for social change

Teacher:

Elizabeth Resnick

Design can and must become a way in which young people can participate in changing society.... The main trouble with design schools seems to be that they teach too much design and not enough about the ecological, social, economic, and political environment in which design takes place.”

This quote from designer Victor Papanek’s 1971 book, Design for the Real World, has never rung truer. Design students and young design professionals should focus their creative talents on social issues during their formative years to ensure that these ideals will carry into their professional life. Graphic designers, because of their visual art training, possess the strategic tools to create memorable messages. They should be encouraged to use these skills for community and activist purposes, and so that they might significantly contribute to public service and non-profit organizations by conceiving and promoting their awareness campaigns for the good of the society at large. The workshop assignment will be to develop and design an awareness or advocacy poster, or series of related posters for any current political, economic, or cultural issue present within Poland today, or a political, economic, or cultural issue affecting the world today like Women’s Rights including gender-based Inequality, violence against women and/or discrimination against women.

Your poster(s) could be distributed through

a direct-mail campaign to a general or target audience and/or posted in area institutions such as libraries, colleges, government offices, public transportation systems in and on trains and buses, bus shelters, free-standing street kiosks, and highway systems (billboards).

Workshop title:
The source of feminine power and its impact (influence) on the development of a dialogue between men and women (all over the world) – poster and its power transmission

Teacher:

Maja Wolna (Poland)

date:

24.04.2017

For centuries, women were seen chiefly as beings meant to serve others. The dominance of patriarchy disturbed the natural order and almost reduced women's innate ability to use their own power and to share it with the world. Suppression of the natural female desires and skills has been progressively impeding women's ability to connect with their own energy force, which is the basis of both vital and creative energies. Authentic connection with the female power within us is not only a source of emotional and physical health, but also the beginning of healthy relations with ourselves and with our own potentials. It is also the essential aspect of building healthy relations between women and men. The world needs balance, which we can get closer to by discovering, manifesting and respecting our needs and the natural right to live and to create in accordance with our natural rhythms.

Everyday sexism

Teacher:

Verena Gerlach (Germany)

date:

24.04.2017

India’s world famous tradition of sign painting and lettering was the main incentive for graphic designer and typographer Verena Gerlach from Berlin to spend two months in the Goethe bangaloREsidency summer 2014. Initially, Verena conceptualised a poster series based on the needs and desires of young women from the weaker economic section of Indian society. Based on this lettering, she decided to delve even deeper into the world of Indian decorative craft, adding punch to her already powerful designs.

Starting with raw silk, Verena worked with the craftworkers to embellish posters with words from hand-painted Kannada and English shop signs and ornament them with beads and sequins. She also documented the entire silk-production process in photographs.

personal differences? Perception of viewers? The workshop was conceptualised in 6 steps: Contextualise: group discussions and brainstorming about the topic of selfies: What are selfies? What defines a selfie? opposites #yesorno?: What kind of a picture serves the #selfie? How visible should it be? Should it be

a photo? Can it be an illustration? Selfie versus profile? Selfies in motion/animated gifs? Then collect: find examples online, look for selfies, bad selfies, selfies that stand out; Next step for the students is to select and present arguments why the specific images were selected; Claim: this was the most surreal sub-assignment, how to claim a selfie from someone else. We experimented with remakes, morphing of images and questioned copyrights. Make static and dynamic selfies: experiment with different ways of photographing, different kinds of applications, filters, rephotographing from the screen; As the end of the experiment students have to present and tag selfie online;
